According to a post from Undercurrentnews, Papua New Guinea saw a notable increase in tuna catches last year, with total landings rising to 168,000 metric tons in 2023, up 28% from 2022, according to the FIA-PNG's latest annual report.
The reports show an increase in Tuna catches concerning its Marine Stewardship Council certification acquirement. The expanded access to the waters of the Parties to the Nauru Agreement helps the country to increase its catch and operations.
According to one member, Marcelo Hidalgo, sustainable fishing can thrive alongside increased production. The commitment and the practices being implemented by the country are some of the key factors for this increase in productivity.
