“National Fisheries Authority’s (NFA) performance so far reflects on my Vision of growing the non-mining and petroleum sector”, reiterated Prime Minister James Marape whilst accepting a dividend payment of K0.4 billion from the National Fisheries Authority. Congratulations to MD, Mr. Justin Ilakini, his management, Chairman Mr. Laurie William, and his board for your leadership and foresight. Fisheries is the future for PNG.
The Fishing Industry Association (FIA) has played an important role in promoting Fisheries and responsible fishing practices in Papua New Guinea to the Global Markets. In 2018, our Chairman embarked on a long-term project – The Responsible Sourcing Policy – with a strategic plan to boost both Industrial Fisheries and Small-Scale Fisheries in PNG. Today almost 6 years later, FIA PNG is a reference in several fisheries topics like Crew Welfare, Traceability, Sustainability, Scientific Research, Stakeholder Engagement, Small-Scale promotion, Accountability, and Transparency.
Fisheries play a significant role in the country's economy by providing employment opportunities and income for communities engaged in fishing activities, both in industrial and small-scale sectors, it is an important income for families and communities dependent on it.
Fish is a crucial source of protein for many people in Papua New Guinea. Both industrial and small-scale fisheries help ensure food security by providing access to fresh seafood for local consumption.
In the last decade, the fisheries sector has generated revenue through the export of fish products, such as tuna, to international markets. This contributes to foreign exchange earnings and supports overall economic growth.
Also, Small-Scale Fishing is a key livelihood for many coastal communities in Papua New Guinea, particularly in rural areas where other employment opportunities may be limited. Small-scale fisheries provide income and sustenance for these communities.
Remarkable is the fact that fishing plays an important cultural role in Papua New Guinean society. Traditional fishing practices and customs are deeply ingrained in local communities, and industrial and small-scale fisheries help preserve and support these cultural traditions.
Overall, the fisheries sector, including both industrial and small-scale operations, plays a crucial role in supporting the economy, livelihoods, food security, and culture of Papua New Guinea.
FIA PNG with the key support of NFA is placing PNG as a brand in Seafood Global Markets.
