First Death Anniversary of Late. Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare

The Board, Management, and staff of Fishing Industry Association (PNG) Inc., including its partners celebrates the life of our founding Father, the Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare GCL GCMG CH CF SSI KSTJ KSG PC on his 1st death anniversary.


We have the privilege of celebrating someone who epitomizes leadership, someone whose life reflects a heart of service and commitment to uniting a diversified tribal society. We will forever be grateful to Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare for his exemplary contribution to unite Papua New Guinea. His charismatic personality set in motion the huge political mobilization effort to get Papua New Guinea ready for independence. His leadership helped the country overcome communal strife through a decentralized system and enabling policies that continues to empower its diverse people to be involved in socio-economic and political activities to this day.


The sorts of qualities he envisioned in his dream such as justice, human participation, integrity, love, peace, sharing, etc., motivated him to confidently innovate and adapt to embrace a changing world.


The fisheries sector and the fishing industry attributes the efforts that our founding father envisaged in his lifetime to develop this sector as one of the key economic development cornerstones of the country to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The fishing industry and its members are aspired to continue this work and we are proud of our Responsible Sourcing Policy(RSP) upon which rests its four(4) pillars;

  1. Sustainable Fisheries Management ( Marine Stewardship Council Certification)

  2. Social Responsibility and Human Rights Welfare (FISHStandard)

  3. Marine Litter and Fishing Gear (Mitigation) and;

  4. Fisheries Traceability (iFIMS)

The Fishing Industry Association and its members have embarked on a journey to become the world's best industry advocates for fisheries management and reputable business, social welfare and promoting sustainable development of our renewable fisheries and marine resources.


We are forever grateful to be sons and daughters of Papua New Guinea as we journey on in this create walk for our new generations to build it's foundations on the pillars of a sustainable and green future. We are here to serve an to protect the interest of Papua New Guinea generations now and in the future.
