From commitment in 2018 to installing Wi-Fi on fishing vessels to 100% onboard availability in 2025
“Increasing crew and family welfare and opening a direct channel for grievance reporting
Tools”

As part of the FIA PNG Responsible Sourcing Policy (RSP), which is the FIA PNG 2018 commitment, and its pillar on Social Accountability at Sea. FIA PNG tuna fleet members are mindful that installing onboard Wi-Fi on tuna purse seiners is an essential step toward ensuring human rights, supply chain transparency, and ethical procurement.
Our Benchmark on Maritime Labour for Crew Welfare states that no single element is sufficient. Together, they create what resilience theorists would call redundancy – when one system has gaps, others catch what falls through.
WIFI connectivity is part of this benchmark on Maritime Labour, adding another layer of reporting and transparency. We are delighted that our crew members have free access to Wi-Fi while at sea.
This connectivity is especially valuable, enabling them to stay in touch with
their families and communities back home. Like all of us, crew members can
also enjoy games, videos, and social media during their downtime – Marcelo
Hidalgo, FIA PNG COO
Labour rights groups have identified onboard connectivity as a frontline safeguard for crew to contact families and report abuses. Hidalgo is participating in several Labor initiatives that are requesting to provide WIFI onboard with free access for Crew.
FIA PNG has 55 tuna purse seiners; 87% of their fleet has obtained the recognition of FISH standard certification for Crew Welfare in 2026 (47 tuna purse seiners). In 2025, the FIA PNG tuna fleet caught almost 300.000 metric tonnes of tuna, representing almost 15% of the total global tuna catches.
