ISEAL shares perspectives from four Seafood sector leaders - voices from the PNG Fishing Industry Association, Fish Tales, Finance Earth, and WorldFish. Their experiences highlight why equity matters for seafood sustainability and how leaders from across the sector are adapting their approaches to deliver more equitable outcomes.
With the support of Walton Family Foundation; we – FIA PNG - invite you to read and share this document describing how small-scale seafood producers are a cornerstone of a sustainable seafood future. Small-scale seafood producers have historically been overlooked, yet they are not marginal actors—they are crucial contributors to global food security, ocean governance, and wider sustainability goals.
FIA PNG has taken a step to support and implement sustainable practices with the Small Scale Fisheries operators and the support of the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) of Papua New Guinea. It is a tangible manner to demonstrate how in this PNG fisheries both industrial and small-scale fisheries co-exist and both are sources of income, generate local jobs, and livelihood for coastal communities depending on them. This collaborative model is unique between the private and public sectors and aligns with the FIA PNG mission for more sustainable fisheries.
“FIA PNG is working hand in hand with the NFA to achieve common goals for the benefit of our country and its coastal communities” – Sylvester Pokajam, FIA PNG Chairman and President
