This Christmas and New Year, the story of the Fishing Industry Association of Papua New Guinea (FIA PNG) is one of gratitude, guardianship, and a shared promise for the future.
The Story of the Blue Horizon
As the sun sets over the Pacific on Christmas Eve, a quiet calm settles across the waters of Papua New Guinea. Onboard one of our 57 tuna purse seiners, a crew member looks out at the horizon. To him, the ocean is not just a workplace; it is a "gift" that sustains his family and thousands of others back home.
This year, the spirit of Christmas—the spirit of giving—took on a deeper meaning for the FIA PNG community. Giving back to the ocean meant achieving a significant reduction in interactions with endangered species like whale sharks and turtles, ensuring these "guardians of the deep" remain safe. It meant the dedication of over 15,000 workers, mostly women, in processing facilities, whose hard work brings the bounty of the sea to tables across four continents.
Navigating Toward 2026
As the year 2025 draws to a close, we celebrate more than just a calendar date. We celebrate a milestone of transparency, having aligned our journey with global standards to ensure that every fish caught is a testament to "Safety First" and sustainability. From the ratification of international agreements to the 100% observer coverage watching over our vessels, we have worked to build a foundation of trust.
Looking toward the New Year, our "Vision 2030" shines like a lighthouse. It is a promise to the next generation that the vibrant marine biodiversity of Papua New Guinea will be protected, and that the livelihoods of our coastal communities will remain prosperous and secure.
Our Message to You
May your Christmas be filled with the warmth of community and the joy of knowing that, together, we are safeguarding the treasures of our oceans. As we sail into the New Year, let us carry the torch of responsibility and hope, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
Merry Christmas and a Sustainable New Year From the Fishing Industry Association of Papua New Guinea.
