On Tuesday, 28th April, our FIA PNG COO moderated a discussion panel with 3 global leaders in the Seafood industry.

During the event, Rupert took part in Session II: Responsible fishing and impact: Fishery certification schemes and outcomes, sharing the certification scheme perspective alongside Juan Corrales Garavilla (Senior Business Advisor at Tri Marine Group) and David Carter (CEO of Austral Fisheries Pty Ltd), who contributed the shipowner’s perspective. Rupert’s contribution was particularly insightful, highlighting the impact of the MSC program across fisheries and markets, providing a clear, results-driven perspective. One transversal key takeaway from the day was clear: minimising the impact of fishing and aquaculture is not only possible, but it depends on collaborative approaches where multiple stakeholders work together towards a common goal, within realistic and well-defined timeframes, and for that, the MSC program has developed over more than 20 years a framework that facilitates the process for more sustainable fishing.

The FIA PNG Responsible Sourcing Policy is a good model that aligns with the topics discussed during this panel, which included building trust, having a good and long-term strategy for market access while having a positive impact on the health of the stocks, biodiversity, market and consumers. The RSP has a holistic approach.
