FIA PNG Join The SeafoodMAP Program for Improving Small-scale Fisheries and Aquaculture

In 2021, the PNG Lobster fishery was assessed against the initial SeafoodMAP tool and requirements, FIA PNG was glad to join the program and expose the PNG lobster to global markets. The SeafoodMAP tool helps our staff to understand the basic requirements to comply with retailers' and market requirements.

Later by June 2022 the small-scale tilapia farming in cages in the dam of Sirinumu also joined the SeafoodMAP program. FIA PNG aims to use these requirements for Aquaculture and Fisheries to assess small-scale operations in PNG, increase the awareness of the fishers and farmers, and increase the cooperation with the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) while we demonstrate the good practices of the PNG small scales fisheries and aquaculture.

Seafood MAP is a globally inclusive digital platform to compile and accelerate fisheries and aquaculture efforts on the pathway to sustainability. By building a global demand for more sustainable seafood, Seafood MAP furthers the impact of currently existing sustainability commitments by all actors and enables opportunities for growth in the sector.

Our journey into the SeafoodMAP program with our PNG Tilapia farms in the Sirinumu Dam was published by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative Spotlight. Hereby you can read it:
