The Ocean is our greatest ally in the fight against climate change, absorbing excess heat, capturing CO₂ and providing resilience. Also, Ocean-based climate action can close the emissions gap by up to 35%.

Billions of people depend on the ocean for food, for work, for resilience against a changing climate. Ocean-based climate action creates jobs, protects coastlines, and secures livelihoods for millions.

Ocean-based solutions could deliver up to 35% of emissions reductions needed to keep warming below 1.5°C, yet the ocean remains underutilised in the fight against climate change.

COP31 is the opportunity to fix that.

FIA PNG COO, Marcelo Hidalgo have joined a growing number of people putting the ocean forward, calling on the COP31 Presidency to make ocean-climate solutions a core theme of this year's negotiations, with real political commitments and finance outcomes.

FIA PNG tuna fleet cares about the Ocean by mitigating bycatch, protecting Biodiversity, mitigating the impact of marine litter & Fishing gear, as well as protecting people who depend on the Ocean, like Crew members.

Since 2020, FIA PNG has joined forces with the National Fisheries Authority to address not only the industrial fishing but also the Small Scale Fisheries to protect coastal communities by implementing responsible practices of the natural resources coming from the Ocean and maintain the resources available for the next generations to come.

Yet, Ocean remains underrepresented in global climate governance and finance. FIA PNG is putting the ocean forward in 2026.
