With the full support of the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) of Papua New Guinea, this was the first ever Small Scale Fishery in the Pacific Region to obtain the recognition of its sustainable practices by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
The video shows the main actors of the fishery, starting from the divers, later with Stephanie Pokajam, who is responsible for the Chain of Custody Certification of the Lobster processing and also responsible for the Lobster fishery traceability.
The video shares interviews with the Lobster operators, managers, and supervisors, as well as the key insights of the FIA PNG chairman, Sylvester Pokajam.
We, at FIA PNG, consider this Daru Lobster fishery a “state of the art” due to different reasons:
Sustainable fishing practices have been passed from one to the next and recognised by the MSC certification.
Positive impact on the Coastal Community due to the strict control that only local divers can join this fishery
NEMO, a CLS solution that tracks every ding in near-realtime
Accountability where together (FIA PNG office and exporters) can demonstrate the origin of each lobster
Continuous monitoring, reporting, and governance of the fishery by the NFA
Lobsters are taken one by one
The Responsible Sourcing Policy or RSP, which is a proven model that worked in the PNG tuna industry as business model and brand protection, is underway for implementation in this fishery.
We – FIA PNG – recognise the importance of both the NFA and the private sector of lobster processors and catchers in maintaining the fishery in a healthy state.
We invite you to share this video that tells the story behind the Lobster MSC fishery certification and the MSC CoC Lobster processor certification.
