A Fisherman and climate change activist rescue by a Tuna Purse Seiner in Papua New Guinea waters


Port Moresby – 20 September 2021— At 0925 hrs on 19th of September 2021, in Lat.01-54.09S Long.143-52.93E

A FIA PNG purse seiner member rescue one local PNG citizen in distress sighted by our look-out while P/L Purple Lilac 888 were in searching operation. Name of the fisherman is LATIN NDRIHIM 50 yrs. old a climate change activist from Lomoei Village PNKA, Manus Province. He departed Lorengau town last Sept.13,2021 at 1800 hrs. after dropping off passenger from a funeral service and heading back to his village he experienced mechanical problem and due to strong winds and bad weather condition he drifted away from coast and went lost, while drifting for 7 days he fixed the mechanical problem of his boat but still running out of gasoline. The Captain J. Salazar reported, we saved him and boarded our vessel together with his banana boat, and now we are waiting for Victor 90 to pick him up and bring him to Ponam Island, Manus Prov.


Our FIA PNG Chairman, Sylvester Pokajam says: this is a good story to start a week and demonstrate our engagement with our local people in PNG as well.
