Last week, our Chief Operating Officer, Marcelo Hidalgo, participated in the 3rd Catch Welfare Conference, which took place in Ijmuiden, The Netherlands, from November 19th to 21st.
Organized by the Catch Welfare Platform, the conference brought together industry representatives, scientists, and NGO members to discuss key animal welfare issues affecting fish and crustaceans. Key topics included technological advancements, artificial intelligence, and the ongoing efforts of various organizations to improve stunning and slaughter practices.
A dedicated third day focused on crustacean welfare, specifically addressing the welfare of crab and lobster.
At FIA PNG, we are committed to advancing and implementing good animal welfare practices in 2024. This included developing Animal Welfare policies and procedures for our members in both the lobster and tuna fisheries. By 2026, we will also be taking on new challenges in prawn and crab fisheries, where we will adapt and apply these welfare practices.
We recognise that an increasing number of supermarkets are establishing requirements for the welfare of the seafood products they purchase and sell, which is also becoming a priority for governments.
Within the private sector, there is growing evidence that adopting welfare-conscious fishing practices can enhance sustainability, improve product quality and shelf life, and bolster the ethical reputation of the fishing industry.
